The 39-point win for the Cougars was vastly different from the 81-71 win they posted over North Valleys nearly a month ago.

The Cougars jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back, dominating the High Desert League matchup. A layup from North Valleys Ajani Norman and a 3-pointer by Will Bell pulled the Panthers to within four, 11-7 with nearly three minutes left in the initial period. That was the high point for North Valleys.

RENO — You can bet there were some fans of the Spanish Springs boys basketball team, and maybe even a player and coach or two, who were thinking “here we go again,” Friday night at Hug.

The good news for Cougar fans was they didn’t have those sentiments when the final horn sounded on a 62-52 Spanish Springs High Desert League road win.

“I have to give the kids credit because I’m a raving lunatic,” Spanish Springs coach Kyle Penney said. “We have let leads slip away and I’m probably part of the reason we haven’t kept our poise at times.

“I’m hoping this win gives us confidence and gets us going.”

The Cougars have blown leads in two games against defending state champion Reno — including a 59-52 loss Tuesday — and in a previous loss to Hug. On Friday, Spanish Springs took a 36-22 halftime lead, but watched it all evaporate in the third period.

Spanish Springs had seen this script before: outplay a top opponent for at least the first half and build a lead only to see it dwindle and eventually evaporate into a loss.

So when host Hug almost completely erased a 14-point deficit in 5 minutes to begin the third quarter Friday night, it seemed logical the fourth-ranked Cougars would fall into the role once

again.

This was not going to be the night they got over the hump, as coach Kyle Penney had pined for following Tuesday loss

to Reno.

When push came to shove, Kyle Schellin went to what worked the first time around.

For the second time in as many meetings, Spanish Springs came out firing on nearly all cylinders in the first half. But just like last time, Schellin made the adjustments at halftime for Reno and the No. 2 Huskies pulled out the victory, 59-52 Tuesday night at Spanish Springs.

The Spanish Springs Cougars gave up an 11-point second quarter lead to defending state champion Reno and were saddled with a 59-52 in boys prep basketball action.

“It was a great basketball game,” Spanish Springs coach Kyle Penney. “We had our chances. We had some lapses defensively.”
