Some teams have lucky numbers. For the Spanish Springs boys basketball team that number appears to be 64. Every game the Cougars have reached the 64-point figure they have won. And all six times they have failed to meet that mark, they haven’t won.

Defending 4A state champion Reno broke Spanish Springs’ seven-game win streak Tuesday night, 62-51, in both school's league opener.

“It's frustrating,” Spanish Springs boys basketball coach Kyle Penney said. “We're good enough. We're good enough to be a number one team on our side. The 11-point score is not indicative of how good we are.”

Spanish Springs might be the region's up-and-coming team this season that is on everyone's watch list. And, they might be the ream that entered Tuesday's top 5 clash with an undefeated record, while Reno is the new kid on the High Desert League block.

The first 16 minutes of Thursday night's non-league boys basketball clash did not decide anything other than Spanish Springs found an even matchup with the Drake Pirates of San Anselmo, Calif.

So it all came down to the second half where Spanish Springs senior point guard Taelor Marchbanks scored seven straight points in the third quarter, giving the hosts the cushion they needed in the 67-53 decision.

Marchbanks erupted for 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half.
